Raman scattering through a metal-insulator transition

چکیده
The exact solution for nonresonant A1g and B1g Raman scattering is presented for the simplest model that has a correlated metal-insulator transition, the Falicov-Kimball model, by employing dynamical mean-field theory. In the general case, the A1g response includes nonresonant, resonant, and mixed contributions, and the B1g response includes nonresonant and resonant contributions ~we prove the Shastry-Shraiman relation for the nonresonant B1g response!, while the B2g response is purely resonant. Three main features are seen in the nonresonant B1g channel: ~i! the rapid appearance of low-energy spectral weight at the expense of higherenergy weight; ~b! the frequency range for this low-energy spectral weight is much larger than the onset temperature, where the response first appears; and ~iii! the occurrence of an isosbestic point, which is a characteristic frequency where the Raman response is independent of temperature for low temperatures. Vertex corrections renormalize away all of these anomalous features in the nonresonant A1g channel. The calculated results compare favorably to the Raman response of a number of correlated systems on the insulating side of the quantum-critical point ~ranging from Kondo insulators to mixed-valence materials to underdoped hightemperature superconductors!. We also show why the nonresonant B1g Raman response is ‘‘universal’’ on the insulating side of the metal-insulator transition.

Resonant Enhancement of Electronic Raman Scattering
We present an exact solution for electronic Raman scattering in a single-band, strongly correlated material, including nonresonant, resonant and mixed contributions. Results are derived for the spinless Falicov-Kimball model, employing dynamical mean field theory; this system can be tuned through a Mott metal-insulator transition.
متن کاملNon-resonant Raman scattering through a metal-insulator transition: an exact analysis of the Falicov-Kimball model
For years, theories for Raman scattering have been confined to either the insulating or fully metallic state. While much can be learned by focusing attention on the metal or insulator, recent experimental work on the cuprate systems points to the desirability of formulating a theory for Raman response which takes one through a quantum critical point – the metalinsulator transition. Using the Fa...

We present infrared and Raman measurements of magnetite (Fe3O4). This material is known to undergo a metal-insulator and a structural transition (Verwey transition) at TV = 120 K. At temperatures below TV, we observe a

Raman scattering, x-ray diffraction, and BET measurements are used to study the effect of heat treatment on the microstructure of activated carbon fibers (ACFs) and to correlate the structural changes with the metal-insulator transition observed in the electronic transport properties of heat-treated ACFs. A sequence of events is identified, starting with desorption, followed by micropore collap...

We report on polarized Raman scattering of single crystals of Nd1−x SrxMnO3 (x = 0.3, 0.5). Raman spectra of Nd0.7Sr0.3MnO3 show a significant change through the metal–insulator transition. In the ferromagnetic metallic phase phonon modes grow in intensity and number while the electronic continuum becomes more pronounced. We suggest that these effects are due to the strong competition between t...
